Virgin Money apologises for Marathon site meltdown

28 April 2009 12:17 GMT / By Amy-Mae Elliott

Following the news that the website for people to register online for the 2010 London Marathon was down for most of yesterday, Pocket-lint got in touch with the new sponsors for the event, Virgin Money, for comment.

Virginlondonmarathon.com fell over under the weight of demand, with those trying to enter online from 9am on 27 April, when registration for next year's race supposedly officially opened, faced hours of disappointment as the site went - and stayed - down.

Pocket-lint's news story about the site's outage has seen over 240 comments from those affected, most of them angry with their lack of success in trying to get registered, despite many trying for hours at a time.

"The London Marathon team informed us that there was unprecedented levels of demand for the 2010 race given the success of Sunday's event", a Virgin Money spokesperson told Pocket-lint.

"Extra capacity was added to the site by the London Marathon team yesterday and tens of thousands (40,000) of people have now successfully entered. We thank people for their patience and apologise for any inconvenience caused".

  • what were the "unprecedented levels"? Sounds like a poor excuse to me and Virgin shouldnt except it. Sundays event was a success just like all the other years if you ask me, no different or unless we are meant to believe that the health of the public is no longer an issue as everyone in the UK is planning to run the london marathon?

The oversubscription for places has been happening for years and last years entry was a complete mess (worse than this years if that is possible). Anyone could have told them that when they put entry live lots of people would be looking for entry and they should be prepared accordingly. I am sure it is not easy dealing with thousands of people trying to access your website but lots of other companies cope and it is far from impossible. This lets down a well respected and highly organised race and I for one hope Virgin step up to the plate to get it sorted for next year.

  • I still can't get through the secure Virgin Marathon sites ballot process.

The only way to enter still seems to be using the unencrypted version of the site which probably means all the entrants risk giving their personal details to fraudsters - not for me thanks.

  • We'd been trying for ages since yesterday,

Finally got one entry through, then tried the second and it worked instantly!

Perhaps they have the system working properly now?

Best of luck to everyone applying!
