Old terms or new?

The results of the "Inaugural Facebook Site Governance Vote" have been revealed by the social networking site.

Although they are yet to be verified by an outside auditor, at 74.4% it seems users have voted in favour of the new Facebook Principles and Statement of Rights and Responsibilities - over the existing Terms of Use.

More than 600,000 users participated in the vote, a drop in the water considering Facebook's 200 million-strong user base, but argued by Facebook to be a large enough number to give fair representation.

The vote - described as a "massive confidence trick" by Privacy International - was a supposed democratic response to the dissatisfaction expressed by users over the site changing its Terms of Use without consultation.

Facebook says that assuming the auditors give the okay, the site will be adopting the Principles and Statement of Rights and Responsibilities as the governing documents for the Facebook site over the coming weeks.
