Facebook users urged to vote

Governance policy to be decided by ballot

17 April 2009 9:44 GMT / By Amy-Mae Elliott

Facebook has opened up the social networking site's "governance" to everyone who uses it with its first user vote.

Facebookers can now vote on which documents they want to serve as the foundation for governing the site.

There are two options - Facebook's current Terms of Use or the new Facebook Principles and Statement of Rights and Responsibilities, created from feedback from users and "experts" following a recent outcry after unpopular changes were made.

Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg says: "We encourage you to participate and make your voice heard. For this vote and any future one, the results will be binding if at least 30% of active Facebook users at the time that the vote was announced participate. An active user is someone who has logged in to the site in the past 30 days".

Voting closes at 11.59am PDT on 23 April.
