Panasonic confirms Blu-ray recorder UK prices

DMR-BS850, DMR-BS750 and DMR-XS350

14 April 2009 16:22 GMT / By Chris Hall

We had already passed on the news that Panasonic are bringing their range of Blu-ray recorders to the UK.

Coming with a range of HDD sizes, the Freesat+ recorders will allow customers to record HD content from their satellite TV, rivalling the Sky+ HD service, whilst also offering an archive to Blu-ray option, meaning you can burn 50GB to one disc.

The twin Freesat tuners will allow you to record two channels whilst watching a Blu-ray disc or watch a recording from the HDD.

The 500GB HDD will give you 77 hours of HD recording in direct digital bitstream recording (DR, 14Mbps), but with a range of recording modes, you'll be able to H.264 encode the content giving you up to 240 hours in HL (4Mbps) mode.

Coming with an SD card slot and USB connections, the recorders will also allow Panasonic camcorder users the option of saving their AVCHD files to the hard drive. Similarly you'll be able to store music (with Gracenote support) and images from your digital camera.

The new recorders will also give you the Viera Cast service and updates via the Ethernet connection.

All this high-definition love doesn't come cheap however, with the DMR-BS850 featuring a 500GB hard drive setting you back a whopping £999. The DMR-750, with similar spec to the DMR-BS850, but with a 250GB hard drive will cost you £899.

For those who want to record HD from Freesat but only want a DVD writer (which will not allow HD archiving) can opt for the DMR-XS350, featuring a 250GB hard drive, and will set you back £699.

The new player/recorders will be available on 20 June.

  • That's nuts! Who on earth is going to buy a Blu-Ray recorder that costs 1K? Specs are good but let's remember this thing is only good for recording Freesat. Do folk that have chosen not to fork out on pay TV want to spend that kind of money to record the odd HD show from BBC or ITV, or SD shopping channels?!? Posted by Ant Carroll, UK
  • I agree, I am holding off on buying a Blu-Ray normal player as I consider £200 too much.

At £1k I will stick with my Humax normal def recorder, I can't have Freesat at the moment anyway so will only be using it to play HD discs.

  • Couldn't agree more with Ant Carroll. This is silly money for a Blue Ray recorder with HDD. Especially as i understand it, a lot of HD content is going to be 'flagged' anyway so one cannot archive HD content to Blue Ray disc! Yes, technically speaking this is the way forward in my opinion. But and it is a BIG but, Panasonic are going to need to very swifly reduce the price of this gadget if they want to seriously compete in this market, especially as Freesat is a relatively new service. I guess it's possibly only to be expected as i know one person years ago who was an early adopter of The VHS recorder at the 1K mark!! you can get those at almost two for a pound now!! ( well i did say almost!! Posted by Mike, UK
  • "The 500GB HDD will give you 77 hours of HD recording"

If the last 12 months is anything to go by, we'll be lucky if there's 77 hours of HD worth watching over a lifetime.

This is way too expensive. 100 quid to go from 250GB to 500GB is also taking the mickey. Put it out for 500 quid with a 1TB disk and that'll be more like it.

  • QUIT COMPLAINING! You guys get EVERYTHING!
We here in America, don`t get SQUAT! No thanks to ALL of the Hollywood

One box with DVR with NO MOVIES will cost OVER $80 PER MONTH!

  • I'm the HD camcorder user. The equipment looks good to me. But the price kills my interest. I'll go for it once it is 500€, max. Posted by Jack, Poland
  • Ant Carrol is right, The people who use freesat are generally not wealthy enough to go with subscription media services, and so therefore they are unlikely to want, or be in a position to buy a blu-ray recorder, costing £750-£1000, the markert doesn't seem to exist, so Panansonic, seem to have made a c*ck-up.
However the features of the device, are very good, and it is certainly the next step in media enterainment.

  • Just as a passer by I thought I should add something to this discussion.
I agree with most of the above, 1K is far too much especially with such a small memory capacity, 1TB would be a better deal but you would still have to slash the price to make it worthwhile.
As for the comment above above the less fortunate not being able to afford subscription services, I think there is a bit more to it than that. I'm lucky enough to be pretty well off and at present I have SKY set up, but I ensure you it is only because I cannot get FREESAT in my area otherwise I would not be paying for the "services" or lack thereof from SKY. I have FREESAT built into my TV's and would love to be able to tell SKY where to stick it but alas I can't just yet.
Back to the subject though, I would definately buy a Bluray recorder once the price drops, but for now my PS3 is doing just fine. . . .shame you can't download Bluray films through Playstation network though!

  • Panasonic wot r u doing £1000 for this come on when you came out with Blue Ray players at a price of £800 one year down the line u can get them for £149 so
every one will wait till your price comes down. So my sugestion is drop the price
down to a sensible level and watch them fly off the shelves now don,t wait a year.

  • £1000 dream on..... remember PS3 and X-box... according to wikipedia as of May 2009 X-box has still outsold PS3 by 8-9 million units its cos of the over the top prices Sony charge and whats killing it is online play.. x-box the KING!! I am def not gonna pay 1000 for a Panasonic recorder....L.G have one and its rumoured to be £350 so i can see the same war like 360vs PS3... Posted by Oscar, UK
  • Who will buy it? Rich people.... saw one the other day in a rich persons house. Posted by Jack Dee, UK
  • Unfortunately the brits will buy it just like everything else we feed the rip of Britain culture just to say we have the latest equipment. I wonder how many people have spent a fortune on pass em buy technology and have multiple media formats in their houses that cost a fortune first off and are worthless now. All the pay per view channels and Sky would not exist if we Brits did not buy them then everyone would get better TV instead of the advert driven sell to the Brits crap TV we get now, shame on all you gullible fools Posted by Richard Cross, UK
  • Nobody in their right mind will pay £1.000 just to record the sh*t we have to watch today in HD.Weather it be repeats from the 70s to all this reality tv crap .If we dont buy any of these units now in three months they will crash dive quicker than the housing market. Save your money for a bit guys + girls Posted by RJ103, uk
  • If you can get Sky then you can get Freesat, I use the Sky dish cable feed into my Panasonic Freesat equipped tv and get all the channels available from satellites the dish can see.
And no I won't be paying silly prices for a the Blu-ray recorder either

  • What everyone is missing is that the future is not stand alone players and recorders for music and film/tv it's solid state hard drives and mp3 players, their storage capacity is increasing rapidly. Discs, DVD's and CD's will become a thing of the past. GH of the USA, spend your money on your PC, download movies and tv programmes and stream them wirelessly to your tv; what are the Pompous Hollywood Rich going to do ? stop people buying PC's ? I think they might be too late. So ditch discs - download it - stream it. Posted by Dave. , England
  • Far Far too expensive and if they are going to stop you recording what ever you want (but I am sure there will be ways round this) then not worth it. Besides as all ready stated most of the HD stuff is crap very limited almost no ITV transmissions. Begs the question why has everyone bought HD tele's? We have been duped by the manufacturer's as usual. The digital TV does not measure up in quality to the old cathode ray (unless transmitted in HD) this should by now be the only standard. Bit like the adverts for digital crackle free radio........bollocks as usual unless you are on top of the transmitter the signal is crap. Same with the TV unless you have a good signal you end up watching squares..... Sold a pup as usual should have known better.
My advice write phone e-mail the TV companies and demand an explanation why are you not transmitting every thing in HD why has SKY got the monopoly on HD transmission (most of the HD channels are SKY film channels ) which you have to pay for. Yes its rip off Brittain at its best.
As said spend on a PC with huge hard drive and down load for free and stream to your TV stuff SKY and the rest of them......
