Samsung i8910 Omnia HD loses the "Omnia"

Name change for new phone

Samsung has decided to change the name of its Omnia HD handset, the 8-megapixel cameraphone launched at the Mobile World Congress event in February.

Despite debuting the device as the "Omnia HD", the Korean phone manufacturer has decided from now on the mobile will be known as the i8910.

The reason for the change is apparently due to Samsung not wanting to cause "confusion" among consumers, although they may have already blown that plan with the moniker switch.

Samsung is quoted as explaining the reasoning with: "To avoid confusion between the original Omnia, which is Windows Mobile, and Omnia HD, which is Symbian, Samsung is deferring to the model number".

The touchscreen phone, that offers an AMOLED display and 720p video recording, is due to launch in the UK sometime in Q2 - no further dates have been revealed.
