UK Street View here to stay, says Google Maps boss

8 April 2009 15:23 GMT / By Amy-Mae Elliott

The Google Maps boss has said its controversial Street View service, recently launched in the UK, is here to stay.

In an interview with The Times, John Hanke said the service is already "really popular":

"We know it is really popular and people are using it broadly and I am totally convinced that they are not all using it to plan robberies".

In addition, Hanke revealed the company plans to provide coverage of most of the country by the end of next year.

The interview follows the news that Privacy International has filed a complaint about Street View to the Information Commissioner's Office, asking for the service to be suspended.

  • Street view is awesome. I think its INCREDIBLY important as an historical record of our built (and non built) environment. I have been using the US one for a lot of armchair travelling as well as planning a forthcoming trip to the US.
The UK really need to wake up and realise the importance of this priceless resource and stop being such a bunch of backward thinking Luddites

  • Street View is the the single most important historical document for recording this country since the Domesday Book Posted by A Fishwick, UK
  • From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Astroturfing
Astroturfing is a word in American English describing formal political, advertising, or public relations campaigns seeking to create the impression of being spontaneous "grassroots" behavior, hence the reference to the artificial grass, AstroTurf.

  • Agreed, all those against are paranoid old folkes and the idea of technology scares them, but they will forget in 2 mins anyway.. so its fine.. woohoo roll on google Posted by :emaN, yrtnuoC
  • Can I speak as a supposed Luddite...?
I don't like Streetview as it is an invasion of privacy, and Google have just ridden rough-shod over any kind of objection. What right do they have to put pictures of my driveway and garden (and accompanying vehicle) out for all the world to see?
I should be allowed to opt out, which, as I understand it, is difficult to do.

Surely I should be able to make the decision as to whether I want to be included in a giant experiment like this. I wonder if any of those people supporting Streetview would be less amenable if I went round to their house and started taking pictures with my SLR of their house, then posting the images onto Google Earth. I would probably get done for stalking.

I don't understand the point either. Its not another Domesday Book, because all it is doing is taking images of the front of buildings, and so there is no context. It really tells us nothing of Britain except this is what a house looks like from a car's perspective. Clever, but ultimately shallow.

I really like technology, but I also like my privacy, and Streetview just adds to a long list of ways in which it becomes increasingly hard to become anonymous in today's society.
    Rant over.
