Spotify to launch API this week

Music streaming service to become a platform

6 April 2009 16:45 GMT / By Amy-Mae Elliott

Spotify is to launch an API (an application programming interface) for its music service that could see the ad-supported, free PC streaming software becoming more of a platform.

Revealed by Spotify co-founder Daniel Ek to The Guardian, the news has since been confirmed to Pocket-lint by a Spotify spokesperson: "We can confirm that we're looking to announce the launch of the API at some point this week".

The API will let third parties use Spotify's music streaming tech away from the PC - so on mobile phones, TV set-top boxes and games consoles.

"If somebody wants to build it into media centre PCs, or if a company wants to integrate Spotify into TV screens, they can… several companies are working on stuff right now - we can't announce anything at the moment, but it's very interesting", Ek said.

We will keep you posted.
