The BBC has launched a beta service that sees live TV and radio streamed to mobile phones.

Available at this stage just to a range of Wi-Fi-enabled mobile phones, the Beeb says it is working on a version to work over 3G, as well as for more handsets.

The BBC TV channels now available for live mobile streaming are BBC one, two, three and four, as well as CBBC, CBeebies, BBC News and BBC Parliament.

The radio stations are are Radio one, one Extra, two, three, four, six, and seven and the BBC Asian Network.

If you fancy a go make sure your paperwork is in order - as the BBC is at great pains to point out, you must have a full colour TV licence to use the service.

Go to http://bbc.co.uk/mobile/live/tv via your phone's browser on a Wi-Fi connection to find out more.

  • Probably a good idea to suggest that it is incompatible with the iPhone Posted by Iain, Scotland
  • It's not compatible with the N95 8gb either. Surprise, suprise! Posted by Glenn, Yorkshire
  • Seems there are a few more limitations then just WIFI. Is there a list of supported phones available? Pocket-lint – research, research Posted by misund007, UK
  • As this seems to be a very "soft" launch from the BBC, with no info released, all we had to go on handset-wise is the info on the Beeb's FAQ site that just states:

"To watch BBC LiveTV/Radio, you’ll need a WiFi-enabled handset and be in range of a WiFi access point. Check that both your mobile’s browser and media player settings are configured to connect via WiFi. For advice about how to do this, contact your handset manufacturer. Note that as this is a live television service, you must have a full colour TV licence to use BBC Live TV/Radio."

So it looks like a suck-it-and-see service at this stage, misund007.

It works fine on a BlackBerry Bold and we've heard that a trial on the HTC Touch Pro also went well.

Anyone else given it a go to make a comment on handset compatibility?

  • N82 with Opera Mini and no joy. Not only couldn't I find any actual videos, but the trailer that I did find for Doctor Who tried to claim that I wasn't a resident of the UK. No live content whatsover either from what I can gather.

Download the Skyfire browser and get your fix the easy way. It has Flash support and therefore works with services like the vanila iPlayer. God help your data contract though. Be fore-warned: It's Wi-Fi or quite literally - bust.
