Next-gen iPhone to get 3.2-megapixel camera

3 April 2009 16:43 GMT / By Amy-Mae Elliott

Apple is planning to improve the iPhone's 2.0-megapixel camera with its next-gen offering, reports are suggesting.

Far Eastern manufacturing new sources report that a company called OmniVision has received orders from Apple for higher-megapixel camera modules.

The company has supposedly received orders for 3.2-megapixel CMOS image sensors as well as 5-megapixel sensors for "another Apple product expected to be launched later in the year".

Adding some credibility to this news are positions Apple is currently advertising for.

The iPhone maker is looking for two "Camera Design Engineers - iPhone" and a "Camera Project Manager - iPhone" as well as an "iPhone Photo and Camera Apps Developer ".

The project manager's role is to "drive the design, development and integration of camera modules across iPhone and iPod".

Apple says: "This is an exiting position demanding a strong technical background including camera optics, sensors, actuators, manufacturing and quality control".

We will keep you posted.

  • Can you really call it 'next-gen' when it's components are circa 2005?

  • I agree, 3.2 = horrible image quality. They need a flash, who cares if it sucks battery life. Posted by BigPP, united States
  • They do need to incorporate a flash for night shoots and also upgrade the lens not just the CMOS... hello! Posted by linkstar, uk
