72% prefer gaming to girlfriends

Two thirds of British men would rather play with themselves

2 April 2009 11:38 GMT / By Amy-Mae Elliott

1 in 3 British men would prefer to play video games than sleep with their partner, with 72% claiming they'd shun their missus for the night to play a new release.

From a study of 1130 British men, of those in relationships, 32% that said they would prefer to play video games gave reasons ranging from their "partner being hard to please" to the prospect being "not as much fun" as gaming.

Further cementing the sad truth about video game addiction in the British male, 41% said if they were given £50, they'd spend it on a video game.

The research was carried out by PlayStation3 site, www.PS3pricecompare.co.uk, a specialist independent price comparison website that claims it can help find the cheapest new consoles and games.

  • Story should read "72% of british girlfriends need to step it up a bit in the bedroom" Posted by Chris, UK
  • I agree with Gamer. Your opinion on the article shows the lack of investigation and research like an amateur "journalist" with no proper reference to hard statistics and what factors was taken into account. You didn't even mention what the survey was called so how can people follow up on your claim?

Have you even considered a price comparison site would have bias towards getting people to buy games?

Not to mention the site only deals with PS3 which is not the number 1 selling games console and doesn't take into account the gaming customers independant of their platform preference.

  • I think you guys should relax. Clearly it's not official journalism and probably not official polling either. But it's kind of a fun article to read. (Notice that you who complain read it also) I'm a girlfriend who doesn't play video games and my boyfriend would (more than likely) gladly exchange a little time with me for more time with his wii but you know, I would probably give up some time also, if I needed some shopping to do.

And to Gamer: I'm not British so, that doesn't really apply to me ;)

  • If you surveyed the men at www.l-love-porn.com I guess you would get 98% would prefer women to video games. For the gamers a nice anamatronic love doll with a multi-button control pad would be their best bet. I guess if gamers are spending too much time gaming then their girlfriends can't be all that hot. It's kind of a vicious cycle, too much gaming makes you better at gaming and not so much at life. Posted by wdmax, USA

  • Awesome, I'd comment on your wife's teeth - but I've never seen them. To be honest, when faced with a 30 stone woman, the last thing you check are her teeth.

72% of Americans too fat to have girlfriends? Could explain why they buy more games than any other nation.

  • Oh aye, obvs depends on what game and whether your woman makes the effort to be satisfying in bed. :P

  • This is a statement of the female sexuality. They expect to be surreally pleased, just like the media says "they should". Posted by grogro, Spain
  • My boyfriend and I have more sex than any other couple we know, and he would STILL prefer a night of gaming over a night with me. Boys will have their toys. It's just something the ladies have to get used to. My man's just lucky that I am a gamer too. :p Posted by Aeeon + Deamin - WoW - Dalaran, USA
  • Hmm, play a fun and satisfying video game that will last for hours.

    OR

spend half an hour convincing her to have sex with you, an hour trying to please her, and then MAYBE if shes not too tired afterward you can have fun.

Maybe if women werent so much damn work to have fun with we'd go for them instead of the game...

  • You know, for how often the typical girlfriend will shun her boyfriend when he's 'in the mood', you'd think all the women complaining here wouldn't have room to talk.

Honestly, if anything this is a call for you to get off your fat, pimpled asses and actually please your boyfriends for once. I don't like in the UK and for the moment I'm quite pleased with that.

  • Eesh!! Everyone is blaming the other ....

My husband and I have been together 13yrs now...... and he's a PS3 gamer... online single player games etc.... and loves it.

Girls - for starters boys will be boys - - - its not that they will play games instead of being with you..... thing is - - online gaming has al to do with ranking, who's the best, who can get out on top of everyone else....ITS A HUGE COMPETITION, and guys thrive to be the best at all and everything that they do in their games.

AT LEAST THEYRE NOT OUT AND ABOUT SCREWING AROUND....... they still have eyes for you... take some interest in what they doing, its actually pretty damn fun when you watch them play and amusing at the same time.....

we make time for each other, weekends etc, however if there is a new game that needs playing keep yourself busy..... do your hair, do your nails, have a pamper me day... this will keep you looking at your best at all times.....

try it girls... this will keep both your interests at heart.....

guys - make time for your girlfriends or wives, they dont nag and nag for nothing you know, if you got things to do {planned events} then it must be done, gaming can come later in the evening - the gaming console WILL STILL BE THERE WHEN YOU GET HOME - I PROMISE IT WONT RUN AWAY..... go out have fun, let others know that youre still alive and live life to the fullest, gaming isnt everything however i know that when a new game comes out its important sit your other half down and explain this to her, tell her that youll be doing an excessive amount of hours on the PS3 etc.... cause you need to get your trophies, rank up etc...
youll be surprised that women will start to understand, COMUNICATION GUYS thats the main thing here......

NOW give each other a break, guys way of relaxing after a hard day work is to think of something else, and the gamers find that playing games side tracks them from that.

AND SEX SHOULD NOT BE BASED ON YOUR RELATIONSHIP

    speding time together is....

  • As a gamer female, I couldn't imagine having a significant other who wasn't as avid a gamer as I am! For those men who have non-gamer girlfriends...get one who DOES game! I know, easier said than done since we're a rarer breed than the gamer male, but if it matters THAT much to you, then you owe it to yourself and to her to share the gaming love! Posted by Arielle, America
  • I have to speak out on this one I love my video games but not over a woman and sex have sex snuggle hug hug and onto the video games and see if she wants to join me. No way would i ever consider passing on sex with a beautiful woman to play a damn game heck no.http://www.rainbowofluv.com Posted by Trevor, United States
  • I think blaming video game addiction is a cop out. Its not that people value video games more, its that they value women less. Modern relationships are too much trouble. The atmosphere is far to adversarial for it to be enjoyable. Posted by DM, USA
