BlackBerry App World goes live

The possibilities are endless

Research In Motion, the makers of BlackBerry handsets, has become the latest mobile phone manufacturer to offer its customers a application store on Wednesday.

BlackBerry App World, as it will be called, will let you "personalise your BlackBerry smartphone with tons of great apps that let you do more with your time while you’re on the go", say the Canadian company.

CrackBerry addicts keen to get a piece of the action can download the BlackBerry App World from your desktop computer or your BlackBerry smartphone over the air for free from today.

Unlike Apple's App Store for the iPhone that requires you to have an iTunes account, customers wanting to purchase apps from BlackBerry App World will require a PayPal account.

Available over Wi-Fi and cellular networks, RIM expects over 1000 applications to be posted by partners such as MTV networks and Lonely Planet this week.

BlackBerry users will need to meet some requirements though.

The App World is only available to owners of a handset that uses Device Software version 4.2 or higher, have a trackball or SurePress touch screen (ie the Storm) and live in the US, Canada or UK.
