Wikia Search to be shut down

Jimmy Wales "closes the doors"

Wikia Search, the search engine from Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales' Wikia.com online properties is to close down, Wales has revealed in a blog post.

"If there is one thing that I've learnt in my career, it is to do more of what's working, and less of what's not", says Wales.

What is working apparently is the Wikia.com community and Wikianswers Q&A site that Wales says "has seen tremendous growth since it was re-launched in February".

Wikia Search was launched as a rival to Google, but with user generated content and social features.

But the search engine "has not been enjoying the kind of success that we had hoped", admits Wales. "We will be closing the doors on the Wikia Search project (as of March 31, 2009)".
