Firefox nabs top spot in Europe

Microsoft loses leadership

31 March 2009 15:52 GMT / By Amy-Mae Elliott

Last week saw Microsoft lose European browser market leadership for the first time in years, according to data just released from web analytics company StatCounter.

In what will no doubt be cause for celebration from the thousands involved in the ongoing open source project, Mozilla's Firefox 3 nabbed the top spot from Internet Explorer 7.

The lead was narrow. Firefox 3 had a 35.05% share of the European web browser market last week, followed closely by Microsoft's Internet Explorer 7 with 34.54%.

As well as the switch from users going from 7 to Internet Explorer 8, a StatCounter exec says "growing market share overall by Firefox 3" explains the statistics:

"The data shows that Firefox is closing the gap and is now just 10% behind all Internet Explorer versions in Europe".

  • Justice at last ! - I use Firefox on my PC and Mac and it's way better than ANY other browser let alone IE. Apart from being slightly slow to load initially, I have found it noticeably faster than IE, Safari and Opera and the brilliant Foxmarks means my bookmarks are synced across all machines irrespective of platforms. In the end, it's just a great bit of software with a great interface and layout. Please Mozilla, don't frak it up :o) Posted by Steve M, UK
  • Woojooo!!! Finally! Could this be the beginning of the end of the evil empire. IE has ALWAYS sucked! I used Netscape, Mozilla, and Opera for a long time. When Firefox came out, Opera was much more mature. But over the years Firefox has improved and is now the browser of choice. Firefox ROCKS!!! Posted by Ken, Dominican Republic
