Google Street View moves on to next cities

Reading next city to be captured

31 March 2009 11:38 GMT / By Stuart Miles

Google is keen to capture the rest of the UK it seems with the Google Street View cars popping up in a number of cities following the launch of the service earlier in the month.

Pocket-lint tipster Mike Evans spotted a tweet from one of his followers Simonster (convoluted we know), that the Google Street View cars have been spotted in Reading on Tuesday.

Currently in Caversham anyone keen to be immortalised in the new service should get down there ASAP.

Other readers have said they have seen Google Street View cars in Ipswich and Chelmsford.

Despite protests from privacy campaigners, Google Street View launched in the UK earlier in the month around 2 years after the service went live in the States.

The roll out of the service - that provides a photographic look at geographical locations - lets internet users get a 3D virtual view by panning, rotating and zooming in Google maps.

In the UK, Street View will be initially available for 25 UK cities including London, Edinburgh, Cardiff and Belfast.

However the company has already had to remove "dozens" of photos from its new UK Street View service.

Images of homes, people being arrested, being sick and coming out of sex shops are thought to be some of the images pulled from the service within hours of its launch.

It seems fears and worries of privacy issues haven't deterred the search engine from pressing forward.

Have you seen the Google Street View car in your town, let us know in the comments below.

  • @Sam-Jim: It can take up to a year for photos to appear on Google's website. My parent's house was painted over a year ago but it didn't appear that way on Street View - proof that it's by no means instant. Even though a lot of processing needs to be done I'm not sure why they hold back on publishing them for so long. Perhaps they wait until several towns are complete and then do a big launch like they did a couple of weeks ago. Posted by Gary F, UK

  • I don't see why Google should pull images in which people are making fools of themselves. If you're sick on a public street I (and Google) have every right to take your photo. We should bear the consequences of our own actions. Posted by John Bingham, United Kingdom

  • Street view is a very innapropriate use of technology to spy on the privacy of citzens
It provides merely for the vicarious titilation of voyerists without any responsibility to the concerns of the general population
If it was a govenment sponsored exercise the press, T/V, other civil liberty activists, and internet forums would be up in arms about it citing ' big brother & 1984' etc.
The basic question...'Why would anyone, other than a criminal wish to view my house?'
    Posted by Roy Bastiman, UK
  • Roy Bastiman, anyone can take pictures of public places. To suppose that only a criminal would take pictures in public places is plain paranoia! I could take a picture of your house and put it on the internet if I so wished without breaking any law, as could anyone.

I saw a StreetView car film my estate last week. I read a report saying it'll be a few weeks before they're online (Google's word, not mine), but I can't wait!
