Skype for iPhone officially launches

VoIP global release rolls out

Skype, as predicted, has officially launched around the world for the iPhone on Tuesday.

The new application, which requires the 2.1 OS is available for free from the Apple App Store, promises the usual array of free calls and instant messages from your iPhone or iPod touch at the press of a button.

In an attempt to appease mobile phone operators around the world the application will require you to be connected to a wireless network to make voice calls.

However as to not render the software completely useless, users will be able to see who is online and send them instant messages via 3G, Edge, GPRS or Wi-Fi.

On Monday Skype confirmed that the company was working on a version of the software for BlackBerry users that would be available in May.
