Skype confirmed for iPhone, BlackBerry

Mobile apps galore

30 March 2009 13:35 GMT / By Amy-Mae Elliott

Further to the news we brought you last week, Skype applications have now been officially confirmed for the iPhone and BlackBerry smartphones.

Seen as an aggressive move by the eBay-owned VoIP company, it sees the Skype service move more into the mobile phone market than ever before.

Tuesday 31 March has been confirmed as the date an application will be made available to iPhone and iPod touch owners via Apple's App Store.

BlackBerry owners will have to wait until May for a version of the software that will enable Skype calls on their handsets.

The software will allow users to make Skype calls, send Skype instant messages and get cheaper Skype calls to landlines or other mobile phones.

On the iPhone Skype calls will only be able to be made when the device is connected to a Wi-Fi network, not over cellular connections.
