Next-gen Xbox confirmed by developer

Blizzard reveals Microsoft development discussions

27 March 2009 16:20 GMT / By Amy-Mae Elliott

Exciting news for gamers - Microsoft is deep in the development process for the successor to the Xbox 360 games console, it's been revealed.

One of the first credible reports on the topic, Blizzard's Rob Pardo has confirmed that his company has taken part in talks with Microsoft about the next-next-gen console.

That Microsoft will launch another console at sometime in the future isn't exactly rocket science, but this news suggests the company plans to replace its current 4-year-old system soon.

Speaking at a lunch at the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco, Pardo did not provide hardware details - only that Blizzard is "actively in discussions with Microsoft" about the new gaming hardware.

Blizzard is the publisher behind the World of Warcraft games, and Pardo reported that he suggested to Microsoft that the next model should have improved input devices that would allow real-time strategy games (and the like) to be better ported to consoles.

  • Xbox 540. Wow thats really great. Not to say but Xbox 360 has still good image in market and its succesor will be awaited with lot of hopes to come along with Posted by Prashant Bansal, India
  • I hope both consoles can be compatible to play online so people with xbox 360 can play against/with players with the new xbox Posted by Mat, United Kingdom
  • That's good news for hardcore gamers but a disaster for parents who have to buy these things! It seems that no sooner that you buy a console, it's phased out to make way for a new and 'better' console...nightmare!!! Posted by Barbara Smith, United Kingdom
  • I think it will come out only in 2011 or 2012..microsoft amy be working on it already, but they wont rush. They cant afford another "RROD" and they must also come up with something innovative. Posted by manoj, India
  • xbox was released in november 2001. xbox 360 was released november 2005. so if they are staying on that life cycle, november of 2009 would be about right. realistically i think it will be further away, but i dont think we should think 2009 is too early. Posted by chad, united states
  • @Barbera. If you bought the console when it came out and not 4 years later, I'm quite sure you'd seem to get better value for money. Posted by Mark Isaacs, London, UK
  • The original Xbox was killed off early to force people to buy the 360. The Xbox is superior (hardware-wise) the the PS2 and the PS2 is still going strong.

No reason to rush the new consoles unless Microsoft wants to really stick it to Sony who is still trying to recover costs for the failed PS3.

What is embarrasing is that both consoles have old (by todays standards) video cards (the Xbox has an ATI x1950XT and the PS3 a modified version of the Nvidia 7900) - Even cheap PS cards can run rings around these old cards.

We are actually seeing a swing back to computer games because of the silly limitations that Microsoft and Sony place on theri consoles... IE no mouse or real keyboard support in games.

Try paying "any" first person shooter with a Mouse/Keyboard vs a controller and you will see how hard it is to control these games vs the degree of control you have with a mouse/keyboard.

  • You guys have it all wrong it was never a fight between the XBox or PS3
The PS3 is in a battle with the computer
Guys who buy a PS3 want a alll in one box, that can power up their new plasma tv internet blue ray games. Truth is, the only all in one box is the computer
and you can get one with blue ray now.

  • @Barbara. Quit your whinging! Your kids should learn the value of money. Get them to earn the money through chores and other personal endeavors. You are weak and your kids will take advantage of you forever unless you grow a backbone.

    (i'm getting one... 4 me...lol)

  • "Just coming up with something that's faster and prettier isn't going to be sufficient. The life cycle for this generation of consoles -- and I'm not just talking about Xbox, I'd include Wii and PS3 as well -- is probably going to be a little longer than previous generations," Microsoft's Xbox head, Robbie Bach Posted by chuck, usa
  • Okay well 1 im tired of people calling it "xbox 540" and "xnob 720" they named the xbox 360 this way because on a square or box there is 4 right angles and each right angle is 90 degrees andd that up it equals to be 360 so why would they call it 540 or 720? think about it... • I agree with D-man - however the typical "quit your whinging you pommy!" could have been left out.

However, rumour has it that the next XBox will be built for 3D TV's. So it looks like you will need one of those as well.

That's a lot of overtime for the kids!

  • It was called the xbox 360 because it begins with a 3 to match the PS3. Posted by Ricky, England
