Virgin Media planning 200Mb broadband

Virgin Media planning 200Mb broadband

25 March 2009 18:44 GMT / By Verity Burns

Virgin Media has said it has the capabilities to offer broadband speeds of up to 200Mbps as early as next year, overshadowing BT's rival fibre network set to complete in 2012.

"We have an opportunity with our network to provide significantly higher speeds", said Virgin Media's chief executive Neil Berkett.

Virgin currently already offers a top speed of 50Mbps, with BT's forthcoming fibre network pushing 40 to 60Mb.

While BT has said this faster fibre network will begin hitting UK homes next year, Mr Berkett has said its roll out of higher speeds would be a "function of timing".

"When we look at the market I don't see us getting the returns right now for 100 or 150Mbps", he said.

"As we work with application providers, and content providers... there will be a natural point where we upgrade from 10, 20 and 50Mbps to something more".

"If BT were to meet the time frame they have suggested - of finishing by 2012 - I would see us as having much, much faster upstream speed, running at a minimum of 100Mbps downstream and possibly more. You can see a real opportunity there".

Mr Berkett went on to say he wouldn't be surprised to see Virgin Media start the introduction of faster speeds in 2010, with a theoretical limit of 200Mbps downstream speeds.

  • The keyword here is "theoretical". Virgin sell a 20 mbps service which only runs at that speed in the morning. By evening it's best effort is 3 mbps - and I mean best.

Most unsuspecting people see the theoretical top figure and do not understand the contention that Virgin allow.

It could end up in the Advertising Standards - again.

  • Couldnt agree more with you. Virgin like all service providers really need to sort out their capacity issues and all these traffic management they have in place. Why advertise you can download a hd film of 15 gigs when ur being capped 3gigs a day?

I would rather have a 50 meg down and up than 200 meg i can use 1 hour of the day. If i could move from virgin i would, but because im so far from the exchange on adsl i'd get an even poorer experience using the net :(

So im stuck with branson lame service. Its all about the quality not the quantity especially if ur a lover of online gaming.

  • How about making ISPs unfashionable, turning them into utility-like companies and forcing them to provide their advertised speeds or face huge fines.

The UK is well behind other countries in the world in terms of bandwidth available to residential users. The availibility of fiber is currently non-existant and by the time 100 megabit speeds are available to the British public, countries like South Korea and Japan will have 1000 Mbps (1 Gbps) in place.

I'm (and I am sure other people are) very annoyed at having to pay a monthly subscription for an Internet service and speed which is not value for money and does not reflect the content currently available online today.

  • Stop giving this company free advertisements, virgin only runs its ISP business to earn money for its hollywood/film business by suing its customers that download pirated material.

Furthermore another reason to not give them free advertisement is because it will only be available to 1% the population (in the most profitable areas)

  • When they can actually sustain 10MB at peek times, we'll talk. Until then, I really couldn't care less about this foray into headline marketing.

Doubtless the other caveat to this proposed service will also require living between four postal codes in the capital.

  • Their 50Mb/s service is only available to about 10 or 12 people right now and they're already talking about new speeds? Posted by GK, UK
  • GK , 10 or 12 People, their are 1000's already on the service and the only thing they moan about is upload speeds.

I get 20Mb constantly, consistantly on my Virgin connection. I have been to pleanty of people's houses who moan about their virgin services and almost always its their router slowing things down and/or they are torrenting with ridiculus settings.

Virgin media's growth is the best thing that has happend to comms in the UK for years, the more preasure on BT the better. Even if BT got there 60Mb out tomorrow Virgin would just flick the switch and upgrade everyone.

  • I am a Virgin Media customer living only half a mile from my local BT exchange in quite a high density population area and ALL my enquiries boil down to say that at the present rate of expansion of fibre optics I will have to live another 75 years before I get more than 4Mbits download at 3 o,clock in the morning. In other words NEVER! It is certanly no exaggeration to say that Britain is now a third world country and like all such we are run by crooked politicians, bankers and businessmen in whose interests it is to hold back any communication advances. What we servicemen called "the mushroom treatment"! It will take more time than I have but one day an effort will be made to "cure" the source of our paranoia. How, without ending up in the same cesspit, is beyond my comprehension. Perhaps we will all turn into orangutans. Hoot! Posted by nobbywebfoot, (Once) Great Britain
