Babelgum updates mobile video app and launches in US

For iPhone and iPod Touch users

Independent web TV service Babelgum has released a new version of its mobile video application in the UK and Italy, and launched it for the first time across the pond in the US as well.

Babelgum mobile was first launched in December last year and saw success in the UK and Italy, with 30% and 25% of iPhone 3G users in those countries respectively, downloading the application to their phones for free.

The new mobile application remains free to use and is now available on iPhone and iPod Touch devices for use in both 3G and Wi-Fi mode.

An Android version for the G1 phone is set to be released later this month and one for the G2 by mid April. Babelgum has promised the app will then gradually extend to devices such as the Blackberry Storm, Samsung Omnia and Nokia N97 and 5800 handsets.

As well as the new app, Babelgum has also launched a redesigned website as well, complete with a Flash-based player for users to watch videos through their web browser.

The site has been designed with a similar user interface to the mobile app so the two "creatively align" and give a fully-integrated experience.

Babelgum has promised independent and mainstream programming, as well as exclusive original productions selected by categories Music, Comedy, Film, Our Earth and Metropolis.

There is also a selection of special content from entries for the 2nd
Babelgum Online Film Festival judged by Spike Lee, and the Babelgum Music Video Awards judged by Michel Gondry.

Some content you can expect includes monthly music exclusives from bands such as Franz Ferdinand, Stereophonics and Kaiser Chiefs, BBC comedy clips from shows like "The Office", "The Mighty Boosh" and "Gavin and Stacey", along with film trailers and exclusive interviews.

Other content will come from big names including EMI, Sony
BMG, Lonely Planet and National Geographic.
