SpiralFrog shuts down

$9 million in debt?

20 March 2009 11:43 GMT / By Amy-Mae Elliott

The SpiralFrog ad-supported music service, a pioneer in such an area when it was first announced back in 2006, has "quietly" closed down this week.

CNet reports that SpiralFrog has ceased operations and assets have been surrendered to creditors.

In order to try and struggle through recent difficulties, it's reported that the company had recently borrowed around $9 million from "several hedge funds and others".

The site offered "free" music, paid for by advertising, but only signed two deals with major record companies, never offering tracks from Sony or Warner Music.
