Apple has announced that iTunes customers in the States can now purchase and rent films in "stunning" HD through the iTunes Store.

The company is offering "box office favourites" such as new Bond outing "Quantum of Solace" and teen vamp flick "Twilight" for $19.99 to own and $4.99 to rent.

Apple says that the HD versions will be available around 30 days after release and a non-HD smaller file will be bundled for playback on portable devices.

"Movie fans are going to love being able to buy and rent films including 'Quantum of Solace' and 'Twilight' in stunning HD from the iTunes Store", said Eddy Cue, Apple's vice president of internet services.

"Customers have made HD content on iTunes a hit, with over 50 percent of TV programming being purchased in HD when available".

In the UK customers can purchase high def TV content, with some HD movies available through Apple TV.

  • WTF...why is this only in the US? It really gets on my nerves that the US tend to get everything ages before the rest of the world...there really is no sense to it and it really annoys me. This evening I was looking to rent Twilight on the UK iTunes store and it's only available to buy?...surely this is an error?

I then switched stores and viewed the US store and it's available to both rent and buy in SD and HD quality - I'm so not amused.
