US iPhone operator to clear stocks too?

AT&T to offer "no-commitment" handsets

We brought you the news that O2 is said to be "poised" to drop prices on the iPhone 3G and it seems the iPhone's US operator has similar plans.

Although unconfirmed at this stage, the Boy Genius Report has seen internal AT&T docs that suggest the operator is about to begin a "no-commitment" promotion for the iPhone.

Similar to O2's pay as you go offering in the UK, if true, US consumers who are existing AT&T customers will be able to buy an iPhone at $599 for the 8GB model and $699 for the 16GBer with no long-term contract.

The Stateside speculation goes - the same as here in the UK - that the operator is clearing down its stocks of the iPhone before the rumoured June launch of the next-gen model.

We will keep you posted.
