Sony says content for its Reader digital book "just blew wide open" with the news that eBook Store from Sony will provide access to more than half a million public domain books from Google optimised for current models of the Reader.

Sony's eBook store (ebookstore.sony.com) now has a button on the front page that leads to the books from Google, which people can transfer to their PRS-505 or PRS-700 Reader at no cost.

"We have focused our efforts on offering an open platform and making it easy to find as much content as possible - from our store or others - whether that content is purchased, borrowed or free", said Steve Haber, president of the digital reading business division at Sony.

"Working with Google, we can offer book lovers another avenue for free books while still providing a seamless experience from our store".

The books from Google are described as "classics", older titles that are now in the public domain and no longer copyright protected.

Amazon currently offers around 250,000 titles for its Kindle ebook reader, a strong competitor to Sony's Reader series.

  • It's welcome news, but I can't help but think Sony is late to the party, where the host is someone named Kindle.

You see, I've been downloading free classic e-books from project gutenburg for ages, and I can read them on my Cowon O2 already so I'm in no rush to buy a Sony Reader based on this news.

  • I have a Sony Reader, and I was interested by this announcement. Popped over to the Sony eBook store, which indicated I needed to update my eBook Library software to get the Google functionality. Downloaded it, started the installer, which told me the version was not supported in my locality.

It seems this is currently only available in the US. UK customers just get a link to Waterstone's, where the eBooks are at hardback prices for the most part.

  • Yup - Nothing for the UK again. Come on Sony.

Love my ebook reader, shame the price of books is so high. Until publishers/retailers understand that this is not a method for passing out books at a greater profit margin, the format will not take off. I mean, the cost of printing, storage, transportation etc do not seem to be taken into account at all for UK pricing.

Also, when is this reader going to be compatible with the mobireader software/site?

  • Any ideas as to exactly why this is not available in the UK? A licensing issue or a technical one I wonder? Posted by Burn After Reading, UK

  • Have stopped using my reader at all as I just cant get titles I want and they are too expensive on the reader. Also, the versions of the classics available on disc from the reader are very badly edited. I like the device - its just of no use to me at all so am looking for alternatives.....pity, as I usually trust Sony and use a lot of their devices - but am investigating macs now for something that truly integrates music, audior, readers and computing.
