The British Library gives music to the world

19 March 2009 0:00 GMT / By Ian Hughes

It's a shame, but here in the UK we sometimes get things a bit wrong when it comes to major building projects and big cultural events.

The Millennium Dome was an unmitigated disaster, in many people's eyes, and there's an overwhelming feeling that the 2012 Olympics could be a complete shower. And I'm not just talking about the infamous British weather.

Thank goodness then (cue Land of Hope and Glory), for the British Library. The controversial (at the time anyway) red brick edifice on the Euston Road has redeemed itself many times over. It is world-renowned as a centre for academic research and now it has put an amazing collection of classical music online for all to enjoy.

You can stream some of the finest concertos and symphonies ever recorded and as a musical reference tool it's hard to beat.

Makes you proud, so it does.
