AOL has announced an update to the Winamp media player available now to its 73 million users.

Winamp 5.55 offers a multimedia "artist discovery" experience, a merchandise store plus the opportunity to purchase downloads and ringtones while iTunes and iPod syncing has been added.

Winamp now allows users to import their iTunes library into Winamp "with just a simple click" and lets users sync their libraries to their iPods.

Buying MP3 tracks is through 7digital while the ringtone team up is through Fox Mobile. The "music discovery" gubbins is via AOL Music, the Truveo video search engine and SHOUTcast Radio while merchandising is taken care of by Zazzle.

There's also an online services program that lets third party web services developers embed their web sites into Winamp so expect more commercially-themed "updates" soon.
