National Rail Enquiries offers iPhone app

Location-based train info

17 March 2009 12:34 GMT / By Amy-Mae Elliott

National Rail Enquiries is offering an application for iPhone owners that will offer them train times, and more, on their handsets.

As well as the travel information you'd find on the National Rail Enquiries site, the app uses the iPhone's built-in GPS to make the service location relevant.

"This is the equivalent of Satnav for passenger rail - it enables you to find your nearest station and plan your journey home at the touch of a screen", says a National Rail Enquiries web exec.

"The National Rail Enquiries for iPhone application uses the device's inbuilt GPS to find your nearest station anywhere in Great Britain. The 'Next Train Home' feature then plans the best route home to your destination".

In addition, there's info on live train progress, platform changes, delays and cancellations and the ability to save fave routes.

The application is on sale now via iTunes App Store for £4.99 with updates promised for free.

  • Ought to be a free app, but no doubt National Rail have realised how uselessly slow their ad-ridden site is on anything other than a proper PC. No ads for us means another revenue stream from selling this app.

There are alternatives however. I use the UK trains web app at:

  • Which is app is it - how can you have missed out that piece of information :) . There is a free version called MyRail Lite, by NRE, which I guess is the cutdown version of the one mentioned. Posted by Chris, UK
  • MyRail Lite is no longer there! If this is owned by National Rail you can expect an enormous price hike every year too! Posted by mike, UK
  • It's appalling that a public service is charging £4.99 for information that should be free. £4.99! That's more expensive than most apps on the store - disgrace. I just hope National Rail get some watchdog onto them. Posted by Robert, UK
  • National Rail have squeezed out MyRail Lite - an excellent little app which was offering a good interface to (what should be, at least) public data - just to wring more money out of passengers who, frankly, already get squeezed enough on their trains. Posted by Richard George, UK
  • What they did to Kizoo and MyRailLite is a crime, make your point here:

£4.99 for accessing free info - wrong ! The PC gadget is free, they are ripping people off.

  • I have been writing about this on my Blog and have had a response from National Rail Enquiries. What thay have done is quite clearly anti competative and I encorage as meany people as possible to contact the OFT and complain.

  • I have complained to national rail (via their feedback link - details above), and also made a complaint to the Competition Commission. I suggest everyone else who used MyRail Lite does the same. Posted by PJM, United Kingdom
