Four new models with 1080p support

13 March 2009 13:16 GMT / By Stuart Miles

Toshiba has announced that it is entering into the pocket camcorder market with the launch of four new pocket camcorders ranging from £99 up to £179.

The flagship model will be the S10, which promises to be the size of a mobile phone, however still able to deliver 1080p resolution for recording high-def video.

The Camileo S10 will also feature a 2.5-inch screen, 4x digital zoom and a 5-megapixel sensor for snapping still images.

Storage options are either recording on to the camera's 128MB of built-in memory or to an SD card. It will cost £129.99 in the UK when it launches shortly.

The rest of the new "Camileo" range will be made up of three other devices including the Camileo H20, a traditional camcorder. It will also sport 1080p resolution, a 5x optical zoom, HDMI socket for connecting to a TV, H.264 HD format support, a 5MP camera sensor, a 3-inch TFT screen and last for 4 hours on a single charge. It will cost £179.99

The P30 will offer the same as the S10, however, it will come in a larger "pistol grip" design. It will cost £149.99. Toshiba will also offer the P10, which looks to be the same as the Camileo P30, with a few tweaks.

All models will be on the market in the UK by May.

  • poor summary there. The P30 and H20 offer 5x optical zoom, the others only 2x digital at 1080p, otherwise 4x digital. Quite a difference, methinks. Posted by Scooterde, Germany
  • Thanks for the info. However, the importance of zoom pales next to that of wide angle.

    The bigger problem is the non-removable batteries, a dumb move in a portable recording device. What happens when they die and you're out traveling? Stop your activities for four hours while the thing recharges?

  • bought the S10 when QVC Uk had it as TSV 2 weeks ago £126 (2 easy payments :) It's 1080p is 1440*1080P, not 1920*1080P. So far, very nice and easy to use and charges form mini usb as well. Came with a 4GB card, and a tripod, and HDMI lead. It also has a video light built in

    Need to connect it to the TV today to see how the shots look

  • The Flip Mini HD's screen is too tiny, and the Kodak Zi6 blows out highlights easily. Non-removable batteries aren't a deal-breaker for me.
    If the S10 gives half-decent images, better sound that the Flip (and an external mic input??) and holds highlight detail better than the Zi6, then I'm first in the queue.

  • Wow, that is such a great price for a full hd camcorder! I want one! Posted by Harout, U.S
  • More importantly: do they have image stabilisation? Personally I find it the biggest drawbacks with these HD pocketcams! Posted by Billy, Netherlands
  • The products all have image stabilisation and the batteries are removeable Li ion. H20 and P30 have 5x Optical and 4 X digital zoom. S10 and P10 have 4x digital zoom. Posted by Graeme, UK
  • @Graeme Thx! Any news about Mac-compatibility? Posted by Billy, Netherlands

  • Can anyone help with how you record the HD Movies onto DVD? When I convert using "any video convertor" the quality is v poor. When connect direct to TV though the picture is great.

    Any helo would be great.

  • I got the Toshiba Camileo S10 and I am a little unsatisfied. The quality of the image is not that good. I wonder why would anyone want HD (max 1440x1080 not full HD then) and yet have burn spots and blurry image?

    In daylight it seems more decent but in low ligh it is too low in quality that almost makes it useless as a high definition camera which is supposed to not produce a big image, but also provide good qquality on it.

    For 109 euros that I got it, I think it is not THAT bad. But I wouldn't mind givving 50 more euros to have it in better image quality and of course stereo sound instead of mono!!!

    ~~~~
    Buy it for your kid if you want a cheap and "good" camera" but it is not for more than this and some personal things. You can't make a professional video with this I think.
  • I got The Toshiba Camileo S10 few weeks ago. It is fantastic to use and never feel any problem with it. I can see in our hands-on photos in the gallery.
  • Hi,
    Bought my S10 yesterday and had a feild day today shoting around. Let me assert here that this is a preety good camcorder.
    I had tested the Sony Webbie, Kodak Zx1, Aiptek z700 & Xacti CG10 yesterday (Flip Ultra HD and Kodak Zi8 are not available here, thus my opinion is devoid of these 2) and selected the Toshiba S10 due to:
    1. Great form factor.
    2. Lightest among all.
    3. *Best HD clips (2nd was Aiptek z700).
    4. *2nd best Still shots (best was Aiptek z700).
    5. **Li-on Battery (keeps the device slimmer).
    6. ***Upto 32 Gb SD Card compatible.
    7. Got an 8 Gb SD card free from the store.
    8. Similar priced; under USD 160/- (the CG10 is a bit costlier).
    9. HDMI port (a must, so that we enjoy Full HD footage on an FHD TV).
    10. ****Deal breaker: Slips easily into my shirt pocket, with ZERO bulge.
    *Both clips & shots analyzed by playing on a 42" FHD LCD TV. [remember, it shoots just one step lower than 1080p, which is as good as 1080p, an ordinary guy like me would'nt notice the difference at all].
    **Bought another Li-on battery for Stand-by (these are the same as used in most of the cameras & camcorders; thus, readily available - not proprietary; costed only USD 8/-).
    ***Note: standard SD card, NOT Micro SD; thus, cheaper.
    ****The S10 is a Flat device, half the thickness of my cigarette pack (B&H 20's) and only half inch taller than it.
    EDITED & DVD BURNT:
    Just now I edited the clips & burnt a (regular) DVD - and wow! the movie was stunning. To note here, the supplied ArcSoft Suite is "just OK", but I had no problem making my DVD thru the Cyberlink PowerDirector Express, which is a good movie software and came with my JVC HD7.
    MY VERDICT:
    Friends, don't have any 2nd thoughts. If the 10 pointers I mentioned above are also your considering factors, go for the Camileo S10.
    It is better than the rest. AND rest assured, the vids are VERY SIMILAR to that of a full HD Camcorder (I have one) except for the manual controls that you get from them. But then, we are talking about a "Pocket Camcorder", whose basic purpose is to carry everywhere and shoot at the spur of the moment, under 1/10th of the price.
    I am deeply satisfied with my Camileo; and so would be you!!!
    Regards.
