O2 set to slash iPhone prices

Rumours see stock-clearing promo for next-gen handset launch

12 March 2009 17:47 GMT / By Amy-Mae Elliott

O2 is said to be "poised" to drop prices on the iPhone 3G, ahead of a new handset launch from Apple this summer.

News that's currently unconfirmed by O2, it's said the operator wants to clear stocks before the next, third-gen iPhone launches, rumoured for release in July.

Currently the iPhone 3G 8GB is available from free on £44.05 a month contracts while the 16GB iPhone is free only on a £73.41 a month contract.

Mobile reports that from May the iPhone 3G will be free on £35 a month contracts (or technically £34.26 tariffs due to the VAT cut) while it's suggested the 16GBer will go free on £45 tariffs.

There is no suggestion as yet that the pay as you go iPhone 3G - currently £342.33 - will see a reduction.

Last April O2 slashed £100 off the price of the first-gen iPhone prior to the 3G version's launch in the summer.

Mobile also suggests that the next-gen iPhone may also be available through Orange in the UK, signalling the end of O2's exclusive and a result of Apple's strong Orange partnerships in other countries.

  • really annoying you...well all the other handsets comes down in prices during their product life cycle, and that didnt annoyed you, but the iphone does. well maybe you should look into the market more. Its a common thing. Plus, you are not buying just a phone, you are buying a divice which is close to a "pokect computer". Plus shell i say, people should stop going into any O2 store and ask for the iphone for free, unless they go into Currys or Argos and ask for a computer for free! Posted by ba_ja_o, UK
  • Matt is right though. Price cuts are inevitable, but Apple seems to attract them on a more regular basis than most.

Ba - nice job of checking your spelling and grammar before posting.

  • firstly i would like to say, when have the internet became an ENGLISH institusional organisation?, and plus being a chinese, we will takeover the world soon, so why dont you learn another language, or shell i say you most likewise speak about 5 languages, which are, English uk, english US, english canadian, english australian, and lastly ENGLISH.

p.s, of cos Matt is right, however if thats how the market goes, LIKE ALL OTHER PHONES.. then maybe its his own problem.

  • I love the Chinese because they cook animal penis and eat it in hotpots. Posted by spanky, UK
  • Don't forget their top quality products, either. Baby milk with essence of melamine, pet food with a hint of cyanuric acid, toothpaste with a whiff of diethylene glycol. It's all finger-licking good! Posted by Mr Wang, Hong Kong Phooey
  • Well, iPhone should be like any other phone, you can choose to PAYG or be on contract.

At the meantime, "being a chinese, we will takeover the world soon," ( ba_ja_o, UK ) ... mmm, not sure if this is a good idea because of the idea "they cook animal penis and eat it in hotpots. " ( spanky, UK) ...

Actually it is really sick to see Chinese ( from China ) eat animal parts in a very strange way ... remember the SARS from civet cats? mmm. I wish people eat sensible things.
