Nikon has announced the Coolpix P90, a new bridge camera that's described as having "powerful features" in a "compact and portable" body, and here at Pocket-lint we've bagged one for a hands-on photo gallery.

Boasting a 24x wide angle, yes those yellow dots in one of the pictures is a daffodil, the optical zoom that offers the 35mm-equivalent of a 26mm wide-angle to a 624mm telephoto range, the P90 is capable of shooting pictures as close as 1cm and of high-speed continuous shooting of up to 45 shots at 15fps.

Users will also be able to capture video on the P90, as well as ensure everyone is looking their best thanks to the "Quick Retouch" and "Blink Warning" capabilities.

The P90 will be available in black from 13 March, with an RRP of £379.99 however we can't help thinking that it looks very similar to the Pentax X70 just released at PMA.

  • The looks and spec. of the Coolpix P90 are great, but with over dense sensors, no hotshoe, no interchangeable lens, etc, bridge cameras are deliberately never as good as an SLR. Now that digital SLR prices have plummeted is there still a market for bridge cameras?
My advice? Buy a Nikon D60 for less than the price of a P90 and enjoy all the advantages of a proper digital SLR.

  • 12 MPx on a 1/2.33'' sensor?? "Sharp images" at ISO 1600? I really want to see them depicting poor light conditions! Yet another crap. Posted by Ivanuska, UK
  • I have just sold a Nikon D40X SLR - fed up with changing lenses and carrying around heavy gear - that's why these 'bridge' cameras will always sell.
Have the 2 people already commenting actually held one of these? we're not all pro photographers and may want more than point & shoot as I did having had the usual compact for years. Thats why I got the D40X but it was a waste of money - lenses are expensive and if I were to buy a VR lens with the zoom I wanted I could buy 2 D60s at least with the same money. Unless you have loads of money to keep buying different lenses (macro, zoom etc) SLRs can be overrated.

  • I agree with Lippy, I have aD80 with 18 to 200 VR great camera and lense but to heavy and if I want to go longer vocal lenght I have to spend a lot more to get VR in a lense, so I think I will trade back and even if I change every 2 yrs I will be better off than at the moment as I leave the D80 at home a lot because of the weight, and take the we Lecia D Lux1.
I always get interested in the comments from the pros and semi pros of how they rubish compact and Ultra Zoom, sure we all know that they will not take pro photos, but most people do not enlage any thing.
Just my views and I am sure that a lot will agree

  • I agree with the last two posters. I travel around a lot with backpacks and do a lot of walking. I dont want a substantial camera with bulky equipment and lenses. This gives me what I need to record my experiences and travel relatively lightly, whilst being able to photograph wildlife and scenes to a high but not professional standard. • yup, digital SLR cameras are the best way to go, however if you travel a lot, then volume and weight are a high priority and digitals I am afraid fill that need.
This camera fits the bill, and I do like quality in my pictures but weight, bulk and camera capabilities are really important to me as I need to travel as light as poss...

  • Hi, im no pro when it comes to cameras, I am in IT and love taking pictures, I have also had 3 cameras in the last 4 years and this is my first step to going bigger, i have family who's lives consist of taking photo's and they always have so much weight in equipment with them that i just didnt want or even afford it. I got my P90 about a week ago and hav not stop playing with it since, I think Its a good idea to have something to play around with and see if its something that one would actualy like to do before spending hundreds or thousands of dollars and then end up selling it again. • I'm actually more interested in a comparison of the Nikon P90 and the Pentax X70. Can anyone speak from experience as to the difference in quality of the images/ISO noise between the two? Here in France the price is the same; I'm trying to find a tie-breaker between the two similar models... Posted by Danielle, France
