Nintendo to raise price of Wii in UK

Price to retailers to go up £20

11 March 2009 22:38 GMT / By Verity Burns

Nintendo has said that it will be bumping up the price of its Wii console in the UK due to the depreciation of the pound.

The company announced it will be raising its trade price for UK retailers by around £18-20.

If retailers pass on this increase, the console - currently priced at around £179.99 - will reach close to the £200 mark.

"Due to the severe and continuing depreciation of the pound, we are, unfortunately, having to raise our trade price to UK retailers of Wii hardware", said Nintendo.

"The price that they then offer to consumers is, of course, up to the retailers".

It added: "We are only – reluctantly – raising our trade price now to retailers due to unprecedented and sustained depreciation of the pound. This is a problem brought about by extreme currency fluctuations that are a symptom of the global economic situation".

It remains to be seen how these increases affect the shelf price we see, but we can only hope that such a competitive retail environment will keep it down as much as possible.

  • Surely they are making enough money from the console without having to bump up the price.

I know each concole has a following but why would you spend £200 on a previous generation console when you can get an XBOX 360 for under £130? I know they attract different crowds but surely if you weigh up the pro's and con's of each console (with the current recession, price would be my biggest sway point) XBOX would come out way on top for most points.

    Risky business....

  • my thoughts exactly Cameron, when a mum walks into a retailer and see's the 3 main consoles on offer, the xbox 360 at (approx) £130, the wii at £200 and the ps3 at £300 which is going to choose?

And they use the excuse that pound has weakened so therefore they need to increase the RRP - but surely a weak pound is better than no pound!?

  • Don't stop at Mum. Basically anyone who's pound doesn’t stretch as far as it used to...

I don’t think they realise that they are not the only ones hit by a recession....

  • The likelihood of retailers paying Nintendo MORE for stock of the Wii, yet somehow selling it at the SAME price to customers is precisely zero. Nintendo says the price "of course is up to the retailers", as if retailers are left with any choice in the matter. Give me a break. Posted by K.A. Noone, UK
