Seagate promises faster hard drives

Seagate is working on making your hard drive even faster so you can access files and load applications even faster than ever before.

Teaming up with AMD, Seagate has demoed a new hard drive Serial ATA (SATA) interface, tentatively called SATA3 that promises speeds up to 6Gbps, or 600MBps:

"Currently most consumer-grade computers use either the SATA or SATA2 interface that offers cap throughput speeds of 1.5Gbps and 3Gbps, respectively, or 150MBps and 300MBps", says Dong Ngo, an editor over at Cnet.

The new developments will promise transfer speeds of around three times the speed of current offerings meaning data and programmes will be able to be accessed considerably faster than at the moment.

Although there aren’t any products actually physically available yet, Cnet are reporting that Seagate can expect the first SATA3-based hard drive by the end of the year.
