Samsung has launched its "next generation" of Q1 UMPC with the debut of the Q1EX that loses the thumb-friendly mini QWERTY keyboard in favour of a full touchscreen interface.

The updated Ultra Mobile PC has a 7-inch LCD screen, runs Windows XP Tablet Edition in a 9 x 5 x 1-inch form factor, weighing in at around 1.5lbs.

The Q1EX offers a 1.2Ghz VIA Nano ULV U2500 processor, 2GB RAM, 802.11 b/g wireless, Bluetooth 2.0, a 60GB hard disk drive and the claim of up to 4.5 hours of battery life or 8.5 hours with the extended life battery option.

The screen offers a 1024 x 600 resolution and 300 nits of brightness for what's said to be an "incredible" viewing experience inside or out.

The new UMPC is on sale now in the States for $749.99. It's not shown up on the UK site yet and we're waiting for confirmation on availability and pricing.

  • So, apart from a beefed up CPU and better battery life, it's pretty much identical to the original Q1 (same screen size, XP Pro tablet).

You can't help thinking that the Samsung Board must be looking whistfully at Asus and Acer thinking 'it should have been us', the first Q1 predated the current netbook rush by at least 12 months, if Samsung had handled the machine properly, they'd have made a fortune.

  • UMPC's what a joke! When you can get a netbook with better specs for less then half the prize, who is going to buy this? Posted by Misund007, GB
  • The price and specs might be a joke compared to a netbook but the UMPC itself certainly isn't. I've had a Q1 Ultra for a year and a half and I use it more than any of my other computers. It's purrfect for sitting in front of the tv with my cat on my lap and nowhere to rest any other sort of computer and use it comfortably. Posted by Ian JF, UK
