New music streaming service Spotify has revealed that it has hit a major milestone.

The Swedish company, based in London, has announced in a blog post that it has made the million users mark.

The blog post reads: "Late last night we passed a big milestone in our history, at 19.50 GMT we registered our one millionth Spotify user!"

"Our user growth has been amazing since we launched back in October, in particular the past few weeks have been phenomenal and growth continues to pick up speed. We can only thank our users who have been great at spreading the word for us and we look forward to our next big milestone".

The service recently opened up from an invite-only beta to free to anyone who wants to use the ad-supported service, although paid-for, ad-free options are also available.

Rival music streamers Last.fm have so far not responded to queries about their current user figures.
