Sony has promised that gamers will see Grand Theft Auto make a return to the PSP in the future. The handheld has previously seen two GTA releases, but has lost out more recently with the upcoming release of GTA: Chinatown Wars on the Nintendo DS.
"No one should sleep on that franchise. That’s a tremendous franchise for PlayStation in general", said Sony exec John Koller.
"We’ve had two that are the top two sellers on PSP right now. So, there’s definitely continued conversations with Rockstar on all their brands. That’s nothing that’s left the PlayStation family".
As for the upcoming release on his rival's handheld, Koller seems to think that the audience of the DS is not right for GTA, which he thinks is made up mostly of young gamers under 12.
"It’s an interesting launch on DS", he said. "It raises some eyebrows in a lot of areas. It’ll be interesting to see how that sells".
GTA: Chinatown Wars is set for release in the UK on 20 March, and despite Koller's doubts it seems the franchise can do no wrong.
After a long delay the Xbox-exclusive GTA DLC The Lost and Damned was released on 17 February to great reviews, and according to Microsoft, has "eclipsed first-day revenue for all previous downloadable content on Xbox Live". Gaming, PSP, Nintendo DS, Xbox 360, Sony, Nintendo, Microsoft, DLC
