Microsoft has announced that the Service Pack 2 for Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 has hit what the company calls an "important milestone" in its development: Release Candidate.

The Release Candidate of SP2 for Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 will be available to TechNet and MSDN subscribers to test before its final release to all consumers and business users of the software.

Microsoft says that "in the very near future", they will be making the RC broadly available for anyone to download and test.

SP2 for Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 include updates that have been delivered since the release of SP1, as well as support for new types of hardware and emerging standards.

Microsoft is planning to release SP2 for Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 to Joe Public in the second quarter of 2009.
