Chief philanthropy evangelist appointed

Google.org - the non-profit, do-gooding arm of the search giant - has announced changes to its organisation, heralding what it calls "the next chapter".

Set up by Google founders "to use the power of information and technology to address the global challenges of our age" the org has now got a new boss with the grand title of "chief philanthropy evangelist".

Dr Larry Brilliant will head up the team with "long-time" Googler Megan Smith becoming general manager while still working as vice president of new business development on Google proper.

Brilliant says in a blog post: "I think this is the highest contribution that I can make both to Google.org and to fighting the urgent threats of our day: from climate change to emerging infectious diseases, to issues of poverty and health care".

Smith's job will be "aligning Google.org more closely with Google as a whole", especially considering the company's decision to "put even more engineers and technical talent to work on ... issues and problems".
