Carphone Warehouse launches Eco Charger

90% more energy efficient

20 February 2009 11:43 GMT / By Amy-Mae Elliott

The Carphone Warehouse has announced its first ever environmentally friendly mobile phone charger.

The aptly named "Eco Charger" is said to reduce the amount of energy needed to power a mobile phone more than any other on the market.

Carphone says the Eco Charger is the only charger available on the high street which shuts itself down as soon as it has charged the phone, or the phone becomes disconnected.

Because of this functionality, its standby "drain" is low, and, if everyone used one, could save the UK approximately 217 million kWh of electricity per year.

Priced at £22.99, and compatible with certain Nokia, Sony Ericsson and Samsung phones, the new charger will be available in Carphone Warehouse stores from 3 March 2009.

  • "could save the UK approximately 217 million kWh of electricity per year"
I hate these meaningless "journalese" numbers, we know they are based on the total population switching over as one from charging their phones off a domestic toaster 24/7 to using the new device. Why can't we be told the actual consumption figures, and what the financial payback period would be under reasonable usage? Possibly because the numbers wouln't look so fantastical? If you've got it flaunt it. When you haven't, hide behind some impressive looking number with lots of zeroes.

  • Shutting itself of is a good feature, but how does the circuitry run when it is working, if it is not a high efficiency design, than it does nothing to improve engergy overal consumption. In fact one could argue the best way to save engergy is using a high output car charger to charge one's mobile phone, since the electrocity in a car is there anyway! I agree with unconfirmed claim of electricity savings, to save the planet, everyone must do every litlle bit, that is given, but to make such unvarifiable claim on saving is simply advertisement. • Does it come in different colours?
    I'd like a pink one.
