Sky's mysterious music service closer?

Exec confirms talks as Omnifone unveils MusicStation Next Generation

An Omnifone executive has confirmed to Pocket-lint that they are "in discussions" with Sky over the satellite company's long awaited music subscription service.

Sky announced the service back in the summer of 2008, but has provided little news since of the coming-soon service.

Sky's already-announced deal with Universal Music suggests that the broadcaster's service won't be supplied wholesale by Omnifone, but that is just what Omnifone is now offering to the UK's ISPs.

Omnifone's just announced MusicStation Next Generation service is described as a way of giving broadband users legitimate unlimited access to the world's music on their Mac, PC and set-top box, Omnifone unveiled the service at Mobile World Congress.

Due to be offered in partnership with both internet service providers and cable companies, Omnifone says the service "heralds a new era in home entertainment, delivering unlimited access to both music and music videos direct to a broadband user's living room".

Angled as an alternative to downloading music illegally over peer-to-peer file sharing networks, Omnifone has agreements in place with all four major music labels.

MusicStation Next Generation services are due to be bundled with monthly subscriber plans, as well as being offered to existing subscribers on a pay as you go basis.
