Adobe Reader Mobile SDK launches

To expand reach of PDFs and eBooks to portable devices

16 February 2009 12:50 GMT / By Verity Burns

Adobe has launched the new Adobe Reader Mobile SDK, a software development kit that will help companies to design handheld devices that are able to download and display PDF content and eBooks.

The new software engine delivers support for reflowable PDF technology, as well as the EPUB file format, an XML-based eBook standard.

In simple terms, reflowable PDF technology allows text to adapt automatically to the screen size so readers can view digital content on a variety of devices without affecting its intended layout.

The EPUB file format support on the other hand, is expected to accelerate the availability of eBook content on mobile devices worldwide.

It is hoped that the SDK offering will expand the reach of both PDFs and eBooks

Sony's Reader Digital Book has already integrated the Adobe Reader Mobile engine, with a number of other companies on board to follow suit in 2009.

Adobe Reader Mobile 9 SDK replaces the previous Adobe Reader LE 2.5 technology, and is available now.
