eBay closes knife sales "loophole"

9 February 2009 11:45 GMT / By Amy-Mae Elliott

eBay is to close a "loophole" that saw UK users able to buy illegal knives from abroad.

The result of a BBC Watchdog investigation, the auction site has said it is now reviewing the sale of all knives.

BBC researchers were able to buy six illegal knives - for under £10 - from international eBay sellers - only one of which was intercepted by Customs.

eBay told the BBC: "Trust is the engine of eBay and as the UK's number one e-commerce site, we know we have a responsibility to keep the site safe for our buyers and sellers".

"Although the UK site did not have any illegal knives for sale by UK sellers, it was possible for UK buyers to see or purchase knives from international sellers".

"This should not have been possible and we have taken steps to close that loophole".

  • I find it unreal that EBay can get away with half of what they do. They are so non-proactive in the way that they run their site, and it is only through high profile campaigns against them that they ever do anything.
I work for a particular outdoor clothing brand, and the amount of counterfeit stuff that the sellers put on there is ridiculous. I have complained several times, but it just keeps going on. And I know that it happens to many other brands.
Its a shame that EBay cannot police itself properly.
