RIM sells 50 million BlackBerrys

5 February 2009 11:41 GMT / By Amy-Mae Elliott

Research In Motion has reached the 50 million milestone for its BlackBerry smartphones.

This rather neatly ties in with the company's 10-year anniversary - the first product was launched in January 1999.

RIM estimates that for the 50 million handsets sold, it currently has a user base of around 21 million subscribers.

Here in the UK, the first pay as you go BlackBerry is to be made available, a move that will open up the platform to a new audience.

Compared to other big players in the mobile industry this is around double the number of Windows Mobile smartphones, whereas Apple has sold around 13 million iPhones. Nokia shipped over 300 million units in the last 3 months of 2008.
