Getty shuts down Scoopt

Mobile phone snaps picture agency closes

4 February 2009 9:34 GMT / By Amy-Mae Elliott

Scoopt, the picture agency for citizen journalists with mobile phone cameras, has been closed, report the Press Gazette.

The agency, started in 2005, sold mobile phone snaps to newspapers with the slogan "Snap, Send, Sell" and was bought by Getty a couple of years later.

A Getty Images spokesperson told the Press Gazette: "If something breaks, it’s an amazing way to get first-hand content, like the Underground bombs. But you really have to have a lot of events to get enough content".

Getty told Scoopt members in an email: "We remain convinced that there is a demand for this kind of material as part of an editorial product, but for the moment are choosing to focus our energies within Getty Images on our core products in news, sport and entertainment".
