Boffins invent new super light bulb

"Holy grail" of lighting

29 January 2009 9:55 GMT / By Amy-Mae Elliott

A new type of light bulb is due to launch that promises to be even more eco-friendly than current offerings.

Said to be three times more energy efficient and able to cut lighting bills by as much as 75%, the new bulbs offer 100,000 hours use and can be dimmed.

Created by scientists at Cambridge University, Professor Colin Humphreys said: "This could well be the holy grail in terms of providing our lighting needs for the future".

Although the Gallium Nitride technology has been around for a while, a cheaper manufacturing technique found by the researchers will see the price at around £2 per bulb.

The first consumer units are slated to hit shelves in two year's time.
