Sony XEL-1 OLED goes on sale for £3489

£1700 more expensive than in the States

Sony's XEL-1 OLED television has finally gone on sale in the UK, around a year after it hit shop shelves in the States.

The first-ever OLED TV to launch in Europe, as most of you likely know by now the 3mm thick, 11-inch set offers a 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio, and a picture quality that Pocket-lint's reviewer described as "stunning".

Although slated to cost around the £1300 mark when it launched in Blighty, it seems the price will actually be a jaw-dropping £3489.

In the States the XEL-1 is on sale through Sony's official SonyStyle shop for $2499, a price point that converts to £1750, so we're not quite sure where that other £1700 UK charge comes in.

  • It's great to hear that OLED is surfacing at last but Rip Off Britain has struck gold here. How can Sony justify charging us double the price as our 'friends' over in the US?

Surely there was no strategy put in place when pricing this product and Sony set about pricing this TV in 'Wheel of Fortune' style. Come on Sony, how many time's have you tried to rip us off before, your not going to do it again with this TV, even if you don't have much in the way of competition, your attitude to us over in Blighty stinks, be real!

  • Looks like the Sony sales prevention team have multiplied the dollar price by the exchange rate, rather than dividing it..

  • I don't care how pretty it is, how slim it is or how advanced the technology inside it is. It's an 11 inch TV for the price of 4 reasonable 42 inch LCD TVs. It isn't meant to make sense; it's meant to make vain, rich idiots think they have something exclusive. Posted by GK, UK
  • £3489 is way too expensive as others have said. I don't know how Sony can charge that much for an OLED TV. I know we are partly paying for the brand name and Sony do make high quality products, but that price is just plain ridiculous! If I didn't know better I would say it's to try and make up for the recently announced operating loss of 260 billion yen!!! If they don't price new technology competitively fewer people will buy. With their pricing structure it's no wonder why some products like their PS3 sales are way behind its competitors. Posted by Edwin Yau, UK
