Sony has updated the firmware for its PlayStation 3 console to version 2.60, which adds a number of new capabilities including a new photo gallery application and DivX 3.11 video support.

Detailed on the official US PlayStation blog, the new Photo Gallery application delivers a "suite of tools" for sorting through and displaying your digital photos.

You'll be able to bundle your photos into albums based on various criteria such as the camera used, date and time and colours in the photo, as well as number, age or facial expression. You'll then be able to create slideshows set to music, build photo playlists and all that jazz.

The Photo Gallery application will require a separate installation after you upgrade your firmware to version 2.60. To do so, go to the Photo section on the XMB and select Photo Gallery. The video above was posted on the PlayStation blog and shows you just what you can do with the app, so check it out for more information.

As well as the DivX 3.11 support, which will no doubt prove popular, Sony has also added Guest access to the PlayStation store, which allows non-PSN members to browse through the storefront without having to sign up to PSN beforehand.

The update appears to be live now, so log on to get it.

PSP users should note that Sony has also updated the PSP firmware to 5.03 today which should improve system stability when using some of the features. That's also available now.
