Microsoft squashes Blu-ray drive rumours

Has "no plans" to introduce Blu-ray add-on

Microsoft has denied it is planning an external Blu-ray drive, following more internet rumours suggesting otherwise.

"As we've said before, Microsoft has no plans to introduce an Xbox 360 Blu-ray add-on," it commented.

"Games are what drive consumers to purchase game consoles, and we remain focused on providing the largest library of blockbuster games available."

Internet rumours surfaced earlier in the week that suggested Microsoft had already commissioned the manufacture of the drives with Toshiba-Samsung. It's only one of many reports that have cropped up since the Xbox HD-DVD drive didn't go ahead.

However, Microsoft has always strongly denied it wanted to get involved with Blu-ray, stating that digital distribution was the future and therefore where it intended to focus its strategy.
