GTA IV gets into the Guinness World Records

Not once, but twice

Can this game do no wrong? No sooner has it broken one record, than it has smashed another.

The Guinness World Records: Gamer's Edition 2008, has not only confirmed that GTA IV is the biggest selling video game release of all time, but it has also become the biggest selling entertainment release ever too.

GTA IV crushed the competition by selling 3.6 million units and earning $310 million (about £160m) on its first day of release.

The official titles of the records the game now holds are - the Highest Grossing Video Game in 24 Hours and the Highest Revenue Generated by an Entertainment Product in 24 Hours.

These records establish GTA IV as the most profitable entertainment release of all-time, far surpassing other video game, film and book releases.

According to Guinness World Records, this is how the game stacks up against the competition.

The fastest-selling video game in 24 hours was previously Halo 3 at $170 million (which considering it was a one-console release is still pretty respectable); the fastest-selling theatrical movie in 24 hours is Spider-Man 3 at $60 million, while the fastest-selling book in 24 hours is Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows which came in the closest to GTA at $220 million - still a cool $90 million off.
