YouTube offers downloads

Small scale trial sees Obama videos available to save down

Just days after Google announced that its Google Video service was to stop accepting new content, YouTube has begun to offer downloadable content.

Although currently limited - it seems Barack Obama's pre-presidential clips are the only downloadable content on offer - the move could spell big news for the world's most popular video website.

The downloadable Obama videos get a discrete "Click to Download" link under the main window. The video file is H.264 format, at a bit rate of 460Kb/sec, higher quality than the average YouTube content.

It's not clear yet how YouTube plans to roll this out, if at all, across the entire site (with legal complications making this almost certainly a no-go move) but we'll keep you informed when we hear more.
