Twitterer captures Hudson plane crash

16 January 2009 11:15 GMT / By Stuart Miles

Twitter is fast becoming a news source in its own right following users around the world using the service to post news of major events as they happen.

The latest is from the aeroplane crash in the Hudson River in New York on Thursday.

"There's a plane in the Hudson. I'm on the ferry going to pick up the people. Crazy", said twitterer Janis Krums as he got to the scene of the US Airways Airbus A320 crash.

But Janis backed up this statement from the micro-blogging site with a stunning picture of the accident that supposedly happened when a flock of birds flew into the path of the plane as it took off from LaGuardia airport en route to Charlotte, North Carolina.

The picture, taken and posted to TwitPic.com soon circulated the twitter feeds allowing all to see before any of the traditional news services had even got a look in.

Citizen journalism at its finest.

  • That's a cool story Stuart, perfect use of the internet. I have struggled with twitter myself. I can appreciate the micro-blog aspect, but I can't work out how to follow a conversation on Twitter. On Facebook if someone updates their status you can track peoples responses real easy, but on Twitter you can't. Maybe it's not designed for that but If someone says something, i like to respond but I also like to see other peoples responses.. in a quick and easy fashion.

Sorry that got a bit off topic but a great story nonetheless.

  • Yeah it can be difficult unless you are following the twitter users that are also in a conversation. I think the aim of twitter is a bit like texting to lots of people at the same time - ie you say what you are doing and people can see and sometimes get involved if they want to - If you want to have a conversation then the phone - or comments like this - really are the best still.
