Plasma TVs facing green ban in Britain

"4x4s of living room" to be phased out by EU regulations

12 January 2009 13:47 GMT / By Amy-Mae Elliott

Large plasma televisions, described as "energy-guzzling... 4x4s of the living room" will soon see a UK ban.

Becoming part of Britain's battle against climate change, ministers have told The Independent on Sunday that "minimum energy performance standards" for televisions are likely to be agreed across Europe this spring.

With echoes of the 100W light bulb phase out that's seen Brits apparently "panic-buying" stocks of the less energy efficient lighting, those who fancy a flatscreen behemoth may want to act soon to order one.

Plasma televisions are said to consume four times as much energy as CRT TVs, with the average for a 42-inch plasma around 822 kilowatt hours a year, compared to 350kWh for the average 42-inch LCD.

The mandatory EU regulations are expected to set minimum standards (complete with an energy rating labelling system) for televisions with the worst performers due to be phased out.

Yes, but what size CRT's? - I wouldn't be a bit surprised to see that a big plasma set used 4 times more than a 15" telly, but as far as I know there's never been a 42" CRT manufactured, the biggest I can find are the 36" Toshiba 36ZP48 or the 38" RCA F38310, neither which have power consumption published.

But on the upside for old tech, the weight of the old CRT's would be enough to put any would-be thief off (the 36" Tosh weighs in at a floorboard bending 75 kilos), and the amount of 'dead-space' a CRT takes means you could hide Narnia between the front of the tube and the wall.
